Dr. Sumit Talwar is a Minimal Access Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, and General Surgery Consultant at the Manipal Hospital located at Old Airport Road in Bangalore. He is associated as the Head of the Department (HOD) there. Dr. Talwar has a rich experience of more than 30 years in the medical field. Out of these, he has experience working as a specialist for over 26 years. He speaks Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Kannada, and English. He has studied at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. He graduated from AIIMS in 1994 with an MBBS. Later, he did an MS from AIIMS New Delhi in 1999. He has special expertise in Minimally Invasive Gastro-Intestinal Surgery, whether laparoscopic or keyhole surgery. He also performs other surgical procedures like Sleeve Gastrectomy and mini or laparoscopic gastric bypass. He has expertise in performing advanced laparoscopic surgeries, bariatric surgeries, and robotic surgeries. While working in Delhi NCR, he pioneered the development of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, which treats diabetes and morbid obesity. He has also performed hundreds of Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgeries in Delhi NCR. He has worked with Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital in Pune as a Senior Consultant of Minimal Access Surgery and General Surgery. Later, he was associated with Fortis Escorts Hospital and Research Center in Faridabad. Presently, he is working with Manipal Hospitals to establish Bariatric surgery in its various branches. He provides consultation to patients at their Bangalore hospital. He is also the pioneer of Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgery for treating GI cancers like pancreatic cancer, hepato-biliary cancer, colorectal cancer, etc. This surgical procedure was focused on providing minimally invasive laparoscopic treatment for these cancer types. He created a fresh technique of performing a 'Scarless Surgery' (Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery) of various body parts like the gallbladder and appendix. This technique was cost-effective because he used routine equipment and instruments. He still routinely performs various surgeries, such as Mediastinal tumor surgeries, lung surgeries, and various laparoscopic surgeries successfully. He has successfully done over a hundred laparoscopic surgeries, apart from other types of surgeries. He has also performed laparoscopic appendicectomy, sleeve resection laparoscopic surgery, hernia repair surgery, splenectomy, and other critical surgeries successfully. He pioneered lung surgery, oesophagal surgery, and thoracoscopic surgery as well. He holds membership in the Medical Council of India and the Delhi Medical Council. He is interested in conducting clinical research. He has written articles in various newspapers and journals on topics like obesity and its impact on the effectiveness of vaccines on the body.
